Perla Martinez 15th birthday party (Quince años). The Quince años is the Spanish equivalent to an American girl's sweet sixteen birthday party, and means that the young girl is becoming a woman. My favorite part of the night was when Perla's tiny young cousins came over to where she sat in the middle of the room, carrying red high heels on a silver platter, took off her old red chuck taylors and put the heels on her feet. It was so symbolic. I'm glad I got to photograph this tradition last night, even if it meant working on just 4 hours sleep this afternoon.
